I grew up in a rural village in Kerala, a state in Southern India. The land was lush and verdant, what we called “God’s own country.” Our community was tight-knit, generous, and supportive. Much about my boyhood seems almost idyllic.  But a few of my memories are hard. Our friend Julie lived up the dirt
