The 2050 CO2 Imperative is now the 2040 Imperative – Edward Mazria, Architecture 2030

2020 NFRC Keynote “In order to meet the necessary global 1.5ºC Carbon Budget threshold, we need to achieve a 65% CO2 reduction by 2030 and phase out emissions completely, by 2040. The earlier established 2050 goals won’t get us there.” – Ed Mazria

How do we get to a carbon-positive environment and achieve CO2 emissions phase-out by 2040? Ed shows us that everything’s in place to meet 1.5ºC Carbon Budgets through Zero emissions design, planning, construction, and electrification of new buildings with renewables; a phased renovation of existing buildings; and the embodied carbon innovation of materials and infrastructure that go into the built environment.

Ed Mazria and Architecture 2030 issued the 2050 Imperative – a commitment to plan and design to carbon neutral standards, which has been adopted by the International Union of Architects and all regional professional organizations (representing over 1.3 million architects) in 124 countries worldwide.
