Vert Asset Management recently celebrated the 7th anniversary of Vert Global Sustainable Real Estate ETF (Ticker: VGSR). The ETF invests across the globe in publicly listed real estate investment trusts (REITs) using evidence-based environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria.
“Seven years ago, we launched the Vert Global Sustainable Real Estate Fund to provide investors a fund that delivered both a true sustainable investment experience and competitive financial performance. We are gratified to have delivered so far.” said Sam Adams, Vert Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder.
In December 2023, the company converted the mutual fund to an ETF to meet the evolving needs of the wealth management community.
The fund has outperformed its benchmark, the S&P Global REIT Index, over the trailing 1-year, 3-year, 5-year periods and since inception. As of October 31, 2024, the ETF had $423 million assets under management. Over 150 financial advisors use the ETF for the real estate allocation in their portfolios.
Vert uses a proprietary research methodology that integrates academic research, industry best practice, and real estate specific datasets to evaluate companies for sustainability. The portfolio only buys publicly listed REITs that are leaders in sustainability. Professor Gary Pivo, a member of Vert’s Investment Research Group, said, “The quantity and quality of ESG data has improved dramatically over the past seven years. As more and more companies make stronger commitments to sustainability our process has become more stringent. It’s much harder for firms to qualify now than it used to be.”
Vert is an active shareholder and works with portfolio companies and industry groups to advance sustainability. Sarah Adams, Vert Chief Sustainability Officer and Co-founder, added, “Every year we write to the REITs we hold to encourage them to take the next step to more sustainability. We’ve become known as an investor-advocate for climate risks as a material component of an organization’s business strategy. We also collaborate with industry non-profits to develop resources on reporting climate risks and asset-level sustainability plans.”
